This Slam also saw the premiere of the short video by the effervescent Jasbir John Singh. Jasbir the founder of Hyperfrontal Productions has been ever-present at the Slam, being its official photographer this year. His high work standards were clearly shown in the photos he used featured early on in the show. Another multimedia highlight on the night was Slam founder Chris Mooney-Singh's tribute to a painter's blue period with an original love poem called 'Picassoesque' written in the Anima Methodi form developed by Desmond Kon and Eric Valles.
As the night went on, the slam poets stuck true to the theme. Nicole Carmen in particular, held quite closely to the theme of the Blue Man, while some others took more liberal swings at writing about the truest colour and what it meant to them. One poet rebelled and wrote an orange poem alongside his blue offerings and won the Slam. Yes, Slam veteran Kevin Wong stood victorious winning first and newcomer and Neo Jialing took second place, proving poetry sometimes pay with cash prizes of $50, and they both took home a signed art print from Jasbir’s collection.
If you missed out on the slam, come for the upcoming Foodarama Slam, on the last Thursday of June, at the Blu Jaz Café. You won’t regret coming. The Singapore Poetry Slam™ remains the original and often inspirational spoken word event in Singapore.
