The Blue Man Poetry Slam Post Script - Miran Ng

Blue was the new Black on May 25 at the Singapore Blue Man Poetry Slam™.  Some thought it was the colour of truth, others expressed all their melancholia. One poet reacted to blue for boys/pink for girls typecasting. Another saw the blue of Nataraja's dance supporting the cosmos. The audience played their part coming dressed in varying degrees of blue and two people won a lucky draw copy each of the blue-covered book 'The Arbitrary Sign' by Desmond Kon, one of Singapore's own published by Red Wheelbarrow Books. And finally, blue was the colour of tribute for long support to Blu Jaz Café, Poetry Slam's venue sponsor since 2010.
This Sl
am also saw the premiere of the short video by the effervescent Jasbir John Singh. Jasbir the founder of Hyperfrontal Productions has been ever-present at the Slam, being its official photographer this year. His high work standards were clearly shown in the photos he used featured early on in the show. Another multimedia highlight on the night was Slam founder Chris Mooney-Singh's tribute to a painter's blue period with an original love poem called 'Picassoesque' written in the Anima Methodi form developed by Desmond Kon and Eric Valles.
The Blue Man Slam saw many familiar slammers and several fresh faces, all delivering with aplomb. The open mic poets raised the bar for the slammers, and this was clear by the way the judges handed out some fairly harsh scores.

As the night went on, the slam poets stuck true to the theme. Nicole Carmen in particular, held quite closely to the theme of the Blue Man, while some others took more liberal swings at writing about the truest colour and what it meant to them. One poet rebelled and wrote an orange poem alongside his blue offerings and won the Slam. Yes, Slam veteran Kevin Wong stood victorious winning first and newcomer and Neo Jialing took second place, proving poetry sometimes pay with cash prizes of $50, and they both took home a signed art print from Jasbir’s collection.

If you missed out on the slam, come for the upcoming Foodarama Slam, on the last Thursday of June, at the Blu Jaz Café. You won’t regret coming. The Singapore Poetry Slam™ remains the original and often inspirational spoken word event in Singapore.

Neil Basu - Winner of the Once Upon a Time Slam!

The winner of the Once Upon a Time Poetry Slam, was Neil Basu. Today, I sat down with him, searching for some insight into the charismatic man who swept away the competition in the April Poetry slam.

So, who is Neil Basu, and how did he get into the Singapore Poetry Slam?
Well, I came here about a year ago from New York, and figured that I'm here with a blank slate. I'd always been interested in spoken word, all the way back from my college days. I used to act in plays, Shakespearean plays, and that's where my interest in spoken word stems from.

As for how I got into the Slam here, I literally Googled "Singapore Poetry Slam," and landed myself at the Blu Jazz Cafe. My first time at the Slam, I was picked to be a judge, and after a few more times watching, I signed myself up!

How did you feel about winning?
Wow, this time it was very intense! All the other poets, including my fellows on the podium, were fantastic! All our slam styles were different, and I was a bit worried, because they were all just so good!

Finally, any advice for people looking to give slamming a shot?
I have just two pieces of advice. 1) Just sign up! 2) practice in front of your honest friends.
Now, let me explain. Sometimes you want to write, but don't quite have the time, and so you're a bit put off signing up. But, if you just sign up, sometimes you get pressured into writing something, y'know? The fear of God makes for good inspiration!

Secondly, practice. Not just for having practiced your pieces, but to have Honest people workshop it for you, give you advice on if it's too long or too complicated, and then you fix it. It helps you avoid feeling this on stage, and feeling a bit flustered on stage.

Thanks for the time Neil, and we hope to see you at the next next slam :)

If you didn't manage to catch Neil, please enjoy the snippet we have above, and do come to our next slam!

Time to Poetry Slam the Blue Man - May 25

Blue is the colour of…blue beings, deities of yore, or aliens from the Blue Planet. Maybe the blue man/woman walks through your dreams via the blue men of a Braveheart movie; or still inhabits the old blue angel myths of the Bible, from Atlantis and the other lost Lemuria that sank long ago. It is also the official colour of Blue Jaz Cafe, our venue partner.
Whatever the colour blue means for you, this is your chance to get in touch with your inner blue man/woman/deity/demon, yes your moody blue agent of imagination. Get inspired by the blue man slam banner and teaser video posted here, by Jasbir Singh John, our official photographer. Mention the Blue or the Blue Man in each of your Slam poems and earn bonus points toward your score. Wear anything blue to the Blue Man Poetry Slam and be eligible for a special ‘blue’ lucky draw prize.

The Blue Rules this Month.
Sign up with 3 poems for the slam or join the open mic - 3-minute time limit.
Also $50 for Slam winner, $25 runner-up, and $25 for Best Written Poem of the Slam. And a signed colour poster of the Blue man by Jasbir.
